The question I get asked most often: “What’s the best type of exercise?”
The honest answer? Any movement is good movement. It’s not about finding the “perfect” workout — it’s about finding what works for you.
When we talk about exercise, we’re really looking at three key areas:
1. Flexibility
This includes anything that improves your range of motion - like stretching, yoga, pilates, or even traditional exercises like squats or lunges but with full range of motion. It helps keep your body mobile, reduces tension, and supports overall balance, keeping you pain-free.
2. Cardio
This is movement that gets your heart rate up. Think walking, running, cycling, swimming, joining a Zumba class, or dancing. As long as you're working up a sweat, you're building up endurance and cardiovascular capacity. Cardio supports heart health, energy, and mental clarity.
3. Strength
If you don’t use your muscles, you lose them - it’s that simple. Strength training helps preserve muscle, support bone health, and boost your metabolism. You can do this at home with bodyweight or resistance bands, in the gym, or in a class setting.
So… Which One Should You Do?
That depends entirely on your lifestyle, current fitness level, and what feels realistic.
Ask yourself:
Am I sitting at a desk all day?
Am I constantly on the go or on my feet?
Do I have any injuries or physical limitations?
Am I caring for others - kids, parents, a household?
Am I new to exercise or returning after a break?
From a coaching perspective, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. What works for your best friend or your favourite fitness influencer may not suit your body, schedule, or goals right now.
The Only Universal Truth?
1.Movement is good for your body and your mind.
2.Different chapters of your life require different types of movement.
It boosts energy, lifts your mood, and helps you feel more at home in your body - no matter where you’re starting from.
